INDIEPOP SPECIAL .... The world weary and wise WORLD ATLAS come all the way over from Brooklyn New York to play some romantic, knowing pop songs for a discerning London audience. Dashing London pop groups ELECTROPHÖNVINTAGE + THE UNDERSTUDIES play before them. Fans of Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura will be in the right place here tonight.
8:00PM UPSTAIRS
Infused with boy / girl harmonies and countermelodies their songs depict both innocence and experience. Their instrumentation includes vibraphone, organ, shakers, trumpet and string arrangements taking the music beyond the pop confines of drums, bass and guitar.
Electrophönvintage has been playing music since 1999. They released a lovely 7" on Plastic Pancake in 2000. In 2005 they released the very short and concise We Sang a Yeye Song album on Unique Records.
"...a London collective, by way of Scotland, they make the kind of dreamy indiepop that Felt peddled in their prime, tinged with a caustic wit last seen dribbling from Luke Haines’ mouth." LAST FM

"The live band consists of Oli with Babak Ganjei and Melinda Bronstein (Wet Paint), William Reid (Gold Sounds, Disappearers) and Jonnie Fielding (Helsinki, Pan I Am, Carl Barat). The recorded band also features three of The Rumble Strips and one of Dan Michaelson’s Coastguards. Musically the album is a bubbling cauldron of folk instrumentation featuring no less than 25 instruments, ranging from the euphonium to drum machines, guitaleles (kind of like a ukulele we think!), and a personal favourite of ours, the humble yet versatile saucepan-and-floor"... A return of the specially brewed SHEPHERD NEAME ale *ALE HOUSE ROCK* - a hoppy summer session beer brewed from all American hops ... and from the kitchen: CHEESEBURGERS, CHILLI-DOGS and DEEP FRIED PEANUT BUTTER + JELLY SANDWICHES, (the latter presumably in some part responsible for knocking Elvis from this mortal coil) DOORS 7PM, FILM 7:30PM, ELVIS MENU TILL 10, DANCIN TILL LATE.
At the beginning of the '68 Special project, a nervous Presley had said to the executive producer Bob Finkel: "I want everyone to know what I can really do." Critics generally agree that the broadcast did show what Elvis Presley really could do - The '68 Special is widely credited with revitalizing his career following years of formulaic movies and recordings of variable quality. The informal jamming segment in front of a small audience is regarded as a forerunner of the so-called 'Unplugged' concept.

MONTHLY RESIDENCY FOR HACKNEY'S FINEST BLUEGRASS TINTED FOLKSTERS.
You might have caught them at their Sunday morning busking spot on Columbia Road ... well you can catch them here the last Wednesday of the month too. "one of those rare acts that, rather than seek fame and fortune by any means necessary, are content to achieve simply on the back of good songs and hard work ... gentle harmony-led songs call to mind early Simon & Garfunkel and even The Everly Brothers. And while Faulkner's superb harp playing conjures images of freight train-hopping Americana, the unadorned, strictly English-and-so-what vocal delivery sets them apart from the crowd and adds to the charm ... impossible to dislike. - Gerry Ranson, Rock n Reel, Sept/Oct '09 8:30 UPSTAIRS
"Easy-flowing harmonies and melodies swim along like early Jayhawks, the lyrics smiling in the face of life and love's travails". Andy Fyfe, Q Magazine, Nov '09

UKULELE DUO ...
Whether it be Bowie or Britney, Motorhead or Madonna, the Re-entrants somehow manage to get in all the hooks, riffs, solos and vocal harmonies with nothing but two voices and two ukuleles. Their abilities on the instrument belie its cute appearance and music hall associations, and whilst the audience may laugh at two large men with such tiny instruments launching, arms windmilling, into a rock classic, the laughter soon turns to applause and heads shaken in disbelief. 8.30pm UPSTAIRS
"...not only hysterically funny showmen, but as another onlooker observed, they can really play, can't they?‚ " Review of Bearded Theory Festival 09 ... "Their act is so very strong: they transcend the limitations of the ukulele" George Hinchliffe, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

"a confident collection of commercial pop gems" Record Of The Day ... "this is VERY, VERY GOOD INDEED, the finest radio album to come out of Wales since Rockferry" Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales
